APPRAISAL OF THE USE AND MAINTENANCE OF MACHINERIES AND TOOLS IN TECHNICAL WORKSHOPS IN NNAMDI AZIKIWE UNIVERSITY, AWKA.

ABSTRACT

This study examined the appraisal of the use and maintenance of machineries and tools in Technical workshops in Nnamdi Azikiwe University. Four research questions guided the study. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population for the study consisted of 55 technicians of 5 technical workshops in Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka which comprises of 50 technicians and 5 assistants. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire. Arithmetic mean was used to analyze the data. Findings of the study revealed that machineries and tools are maintained in technical workshops. The study also revealed that, lack of adequate capital for maintenance and poor attitude of teachers towards maintenance are the constraints to the maintenance of machineries and tools in technical workshops. The study further revealed that Workshops and conferences should be organized for workshop personnel, Periodic servicing of tools and machines, and Keeping proper inventory of tools and machines are the strategies for the maintenance of machineries and tools in technical workshops. The study recommended that Functional and qualified technicians should be employed to handle technical workshops in tertiary institutions, and Government should equip technical workshops with the adequate machineries and tools required.
